CSA Week 13 - Vegetables with a Smile

The other day, while meandering about blogland, I found a smiley face made out of vegetables at Thyme For Cooking, with the instruction to pass it along. So when I got my vegetables home yesterday, I made a face while I catalogued the haul.

  • String Beans
  • Corn (4 ears)
  • Mustard Greens
  • Potatoes (3 big red ones)
  • Small Tomatoes (1 pint)
  • Medium Tomatoes (1 quart)
  • Red Italia Peppers (5)
  • Cucumber (1)
  • Garlic (1 head)
  • Red Onion (1)
  • Salad Mix
  • Basil
  • Cilantro
  • Parsley
  • Arugula

This is the first week without swiss chard in a long time. It's also the first time we've gotten either potatoes or mustard greens. And, unlike some other people, we're not overwhelmed with tomatoes. In fact, we're still buying extras on the weekend, because August is really all about tomatoes. I'd kind of like to be overwhelmed. We could fill the freezer with tomato sauce and roasted tomatoes, and eat well all winter.

P.S. Want to see some more vegetable smiley faces? Here's a whole slide show!

What a lovely face! Perhaps I'll do one with my own haul next week.

I'm jealous of your greens. We were overwhelmed with them in the first weeks, but haven't seen a leafy bit (aside from some basil) for many weeks. I'm particularly fond of arugula (which I also just enjoy saying), and mustard greens sound mighty tasty. (Neither of which are grown at the farm I go to, by the way. We had lots of kale, and lots and lots of lettuce.)

And thanks for stopping by my blog, and for the link!

Our box service tells us what's in it. I am going to have to draw out some ideas in advance!!!

My significant other makes smiley faces out of most meals, when the chance presents itself. I can totally relate!

Did you really make that face? Healthy and talented. Wow.

How cute! There's a kid's cooking book out there called, I think, Playing with Your Food or How to Play with Your Food or something similar. They have a "pear people" recipe that my kids loved.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I can't wait to go through your CSA archives, especially. We plan to sign up for one in the spring and I'd love to see what kind of creative things you did with yours!

I'm still overwhelmed with greens -- I just can't figure out how to eat an entire cabbage every week, when I also have kale and salad greens!

I am growing a few tomatoes in pots on my deck, and a good thing because I've gotten only 1/2 a dozen from my CSA so far. O the limitations of climate! (On the other hand, this week I also got strawberries. In August, can you believe it?)
